Cyrille Oswald started playing professionally in 1994 when living in the Caribbean. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he formed a Latin ensemble and studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he received his Masters in 2001 as a pupil of John Ruocco. The same year he started his first modern jazz quartet called Amalgam with which he recorded an album, performed original compositions and became a finalist at the yearly North Sea Jazz festival competition for new emerging jazz bands.
In 2004 he recorded an album with originals together with Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug. In 2007, Cyrille Oswald set up a new trio and quartet with Stefan Lievestro on acoustic bass, Jeroen van Vliet on piano and Erik Kooger on drums. They recorded the CD Nerve with original compositions, which was acclaimed both by the public and the press (5 stars in JAZZ magazine).
His first recording in the Czech Republic with Animal Music in 2010 with David Dorůžka on guitar, Tomáš Liška on bass and Dano Šoltis on drums, with original compositions.
In 2014 he founded the band Cirilic together with guitarist Kirill Jakovlev. They recorded two albums, “A Golden Age” and “Memories from Heaven”.
In 2015 he produced an album with songs from the Andes, on which he sings and plays different flutes, together with guitarist Petr Zelenka.
He is a member of one of the most important orchestras on the Dutch music scene, the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, and he plays with the band since its founding in 2003. They recently recorded their 7th album and celebrated their 20 year anniversary, among others with a concert at the North Sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam, where they performed regularly throughout the years.
Since 2020, he is teaching saxophone at the Jazz department of the JAMU Academy in Brno.
In 2024, Cyrille Oswald started to play with the Survivors, a trio led by bassist Jiří Slavik. They recorded a live album from a concert in the famous jazzclub Jazz Dock in Prague. The album is called First Live Round and can be heard on Spotify and other streaming platforms.
He is also a member of a new ensemble called “Polkaboys” which is led by Jiří Slavik. A live concert was premiered on Czech tv and can be seen here.
Throughout his career, he has played with some of the greatest jazz players, such as Arturo Sandoval, Joshua Redman, Carla Bley and Terence Blanchard to name a few.
He has more than 50 original compositions to his name and continues to write and arrange music for different ensembles and groups. He also features on more than 30 albums as a sideman.
